Nottingham startup scene is in full swing

I've recently been to Nottingham and explored parts of the startup scene while I was there. As a city with great universities, centrally located in the UK, close to both the A1 and M1 motorways with an airport, there is a lot to be said about starting up a business in the city. There is the fact that city rent prices are always higher than the surrounding areas, and the slight hint of congestion in the city centre, but give me a vibrant city that doesn't have these. I don't think they exist.

Nottingham as a startup location is something that businesses in and around the area, as well as across the UK could well think about. It is a city that is primed for growth and is looking to increase its presence as the bid for European Capital of Culture takes shape. The more a city like Nottingham gets involved in these international projects, the more likely it is to attract startup businesses and provide a great environment for them to thrive and collaborate in.

The National Videogame Arcade

This is a recent venture in the city that attracts a lot of attention from anyone under the age of around fifty. The National Videogame Arcade is filled with arcade games, consoles and the latest technology. Although a not-for-profit, this still fits under the startup umbrella because it needs to attract visitors to stay afloat. A startup doesn't need to make money (or intend to make money) to face all the challenges the rest of us do.

The NVA is a great example of how the passions of people make the perfect vehicle for a startup. If you are doing something you really love then it is a pleasure to get up and go to work every day. the staff at the arcade are testament to this attitude. You can see they love what they are doing. The NVA has been around only since 2015, but I can see a bright future for it.

Impression Digital

Another business that has been a startup success in Nottingham is Impression Digital. They were attracted to the potential of the city rather than what was already in place. It is businesses like this that have made the Creative Quarter in Nottingham, a hub for tech. We know from Silicon Valley and others that tech businesses in the same place can inspire and drive each other forward.

The lesson for your business is one that might have been very different even a few years ago. Collaboration and openness of ideas is what modern business is all about. In the past we keot trade secrets and wanted to protect what we had. But now, the future is on where we can discuss our ideas and work together. I know which way I would rather operate.

Don't close the doors on other businesses in your area. Communication is important, so I suggest you go to networking events and talk to people. You will gain far more than you think you could lose.

Trademark your brand and grow your startup business

One of the biggest issues for a startup business is protecting your ideas. Every startup is built on the solid foundation of an idea and the passion of an individual. We can all see a niche in the market or something that has never been tried before. As an entrepreneur, you look to develop what you offer every day so customers can see your product or service and flock to you. This is how success is made.
But without the proper protections in place, you are vulnerable to other businesses and unscrupulous operators. Something needs to be done. Don’t worry – there is help at hand.
The ultimate protection for the small business is an Intellectual Property or IP service offered by the professionals at Lum Law Group. They have a professional team in this area, headed by A. Justin Lum who is experienced in helping small businesses to set up and grow.

Growing your startup business

For a startup to thrive and grow, it needs to have the right foundations in place. Unfortunately, in the business world there are some people who want to steal the success of others rather than make money from their own ideas. This means that IP protection is an absolute must for the savvy startup business owner.
Your business is built on certain ideas that should be protected at all costs. Without the right protection, you can end up working hard for someone else to benefit. This would leave you wishing you had acted sooner to protect principles like –
·         The brand that you have built
·         The ideas that your business is formed on
·         The invention that you are selling

Lum Law Group know how it feels to be at the cutting edge of your business. That’s why they are here to help you look after your business from day one. Their flat rate startup packages allow you to protect all that is important about your business without breaking the bank.
Don’t be one of the stories that business leaders tell at conferences of the startup owner who had it all but failed to protect any of it. You have already worked too hard for that. Get in touch with Lum Law Group and take your business to the next level without the fear that it is vulnerable. You deserve the best protection to make your startup a success – get it today!

Assessing your startup - where you have been, where you are now and where you are going

This is my moment to look both backwards and forwards in my startup journey. For those that have been with me from the start you will know how my journey has gone. For everyone else I will give you a short recap-

  • The idea was to start an estate agency in the town where I live
  • As I set about getting things in place I decided that I needed a residual income
  • I started writing
  • I blogged and I wrote my own eBooks
  • From there I found freelance writing
  • I started writing for others in my spare time
  • I then abandoned plans for the estate agency and became a full-time writer

This has been the journey of a few years summed up in a few bullets points so there have been highs and lows but this is the basic timeline that has brought me to here. Writing is now my life, so as well as this blog I write several others for myself. I write my own books still and publish them on the Amazon Kindle store.I write for other people. And I write whatever comes my way-
  • I ghostwrite books for people
  • I write marketing materials for people
  • I write the content for websites
  • I write social media post on behalf of companies
  • I write customer brochures
  • I write business plans
I pretty much write what people need, with the exceptions of school work and reviews. From this my business has grown and I will use this blog to briefly outline where I am today and where I think I will be over the next 6 to 9 months.

Currently

I have two websites that give me an internet presence. They can be found here-

They let the world know that I exists and along with my social media presence are the outward face of my business. They give me access to customers and also give customers the opportunity to check out what I am and what I do before they get in touch.

A lot of my work comes from existing relationships that have come from varied sources and developed over the years. I work for people all over the United Kingdom, and indeed the world, on a regular basis and write for certain people month in, month out.

A great source of business is going to be the BNI networking chapter that I have joined. It is going to break all records as the biggest group to launch in the UK and Ireland and is doing this at lightning pace. I am very proud to be a part of the group and I look forward to being able to give my fellow chapter members a lot of business from my contacts in the future.

The future

I am growing at a much faster rate than I expected at all. The business is flowing and I am being asked more and more to help people with their writing, especially content writing for businesses. I can see a pint in the future 6 to 9 months where I will be looking for someone to help with the writing and join me. I haven't got through Christmas and January yet as my first year of full-time trading so I don't know how quiet it might go. But I am quietly confident that this will be more than I can produce fr myself in the not-too-distant future.

My new novel is being written now and I am around a third of the way through the writing process. It does tens to take a back seat when I am working hard for other people but the idea is to have it ready to be published in the early part of the new year and be generating sales from then.It will be the first fiction book I have written for myself and I am really looking forward to seeing it out there and marketing it. I think it will make a splash.

This has helped me as I have been writing to clear my mind and look to the future. I suggest that if you are looking for a bit of clarity in your startup business right now then you go through a similar exercise. It allows you to focus on what is important and where you want to take your business.

Startups need to always be thinking of training their teams

A startup needs to be moving forwards all the time. If you stand still at any point then the market and your competition overtake you and you are left playing catch-up. And nothing is more important than making sure that your team is fully up to date with their training needs.

It can be easy to set up with a fully trained team and then think that you can just forget about training completely. But that is a big mistake to make. Your team are a valuable asset to your company and their training reflects how much you care about the service they are able to deliver to your customers.  Develop Intelligence are a great company to use if you want help in getting your team firing on all cylinders.

Your team spend all of their time making sure that your customer needs are met. They are responsible for –

  •          Connecting with customers
  •          Delivering the products or services that you sell
  •          Improving the customer experience
  •          Reaching out to new customers

And much more. Investing in their training with a great provider like Develop Intelligence means that you can keep your team at the top of their game and keep ahead of the competition. Don’t let your rivals steal a march on you and your startup business. Keep your team trained and motivated to ensure that you stay successful.

Startup business can be quite a cutthroat place to be so you need to make sure that all aspects of your business are on top form. You wouldn’t let something like your business insurance run out, so don’t let the training and qualifications of you and your team hold you back.

Top 4 things to remember when using content marketing to supercharge your startup

Content marketing helps your startup business to reach new customers. When you begin in business you need a steady supply of customers to get off the ground and continue on a successful trajectory. Content marketing establishes you and your business as an authority in your industry. It connects you with more potential customers and develops a level of trust. Here are my top 4 things to remember when using content marketing to supercharge your startup-

It can be a slow burner
Content marketing doesn't always bring you immediate results. This is about building a rapport with your customers and that just doesn't happen overnight. You are sowing seeds that will grow over time. You and your audience need to get to know each other first. The work you put in here means that when someone needs your service or product you are the provider of choice.

You have to stick at it
Content marketing builds over time. You can't upload content at the start of a campaign and then completely forget about it. Content marketing doesn't work they way. You need a constant flow of quality and relevant content for your readers. This helps you with your SEO rankings, keeps your content looking fresh and connects with more customers.

Publicise it
Content is great for furthering you'd startup business but you need people to read it. To get an impact from your content marketing you want to spread the word as much as you can. Use your website and your social media reach to get the message to as many potential customers as possible. The more people that read what you have to say then the greater chance you have of your message being read, shared, liked and commented on. The more you can connect with people the more well-known your brand becomes.

Fish in the right pool
A strong message is great but it has to be seen by a relevant audience. You want to get your message out there in all the right places. You need to know where your audience hangs out so you know you will reach them. Look at all the options you have, especially social media, so you can find the relevant market for your product or service. By connecting with your people in the places they already spend their time then you will appeal to them. This is another step towards turning them into your future customers.

If you are looking for help with your content writing then get in touch via my website. I can write content for you and help your startup business get off the ground.

Swipe Business Messenger is a great app that can help you to get backyour work life balance

When you startup your own business there is a lot of information thrown at you. For the small business owner and entrepreneur you will make use of your smartphone and many of the features on it to stay in touch with your customers, suppliers and business contacts. But sometimes you want to be able to switch off from all of this and keep in touch with your friends and family.

I know from my experience I look at my smartphone and think “I’m not going onto that because it will be full of work-relate messages. I’m having some time off.” But your smartphone is also where you keep in touch with friends, check out social media updates and generally hang out.

There is a solution to the problem of separating your work life from your private life. That solution is Swipe Business Messenger. It is an instant messaging app for your phone that allows you to easily separate your business and social messaging. It means that your smartphone is a safe area to visit again after work hours! You want to be the best startup owner you can be and a part of that is taking some time away from the business to catch up with your personal life.

As a self-employed business or as a freelancer there is so much pressure on your time already. There is currently no way to separate your business from your social life on your smartphone – until now because Swipe Business Messenger has looked at this problem as developed a solution. Technostress is a real issue for the startup business owner and can cause you to lose that important balance between your work life and your home life. It is a hugely important distinction to make and when these two merge you find that business becomes tougher and much more stressful. Work life balance has become a major issue in employment over the last few years and Swipe Business Messenger are working to get that balance back into the right place.

I love to bring you ideas that will make a big change to you and your startup business and Swipe Business Messenger is a great innovation that can help you to have that crucial time away from your business to relax and unwind. Many startup businesses have failed because of the stress that constant connection with your client base and business does. This is starting the fight back!

Ghostwriting and self-publishing startup in earnest today

Today is the first day of my new life. That may sound a little dramatic but that is exactly what it is. I finished my employment in Sunday, the kids were off school yesterday so today marks the start of my solely self-employed life. I find it a refreshing change already! I am now a writer. As regular readers of this blog will know-

I started out looking to set up my own estate agency.

I have fallen into writing for myself and others.

The estate agency idea is firmly on the back-burner today, but will come through in some of the other things I do because I still write an estate agency blog, I have an estate agency/real estate gig on fiverr and I will be writing a guide on how to set up your own estate agency.

This blog will now take the form of something that informs readers about my progress, something that informs you about other startups and products that might be useful to you.

So with the start today I have planned out my next ten books so that I know what I will be able to produce over the next few weeks. The reason that I have done this is do that I don't have any downtime. My main source of income initially will be to write for others. This is so I can gain immediate income from producing things got other people. I am paid up front for this work and I don' t have to wait for sales. This puts me in a position where I can warm straight away. But I can't guarantee that I can fill every minute of every day with this. There will be times where I don't have anything to write for anyone else. In those times I will write got myself, add to my portfolio and give myself a chance of long-term income.

Today will also see three telephone calls-

  • The inland revenue to register as self-employed
  • The tax credit people with a change in my circumstances
  • A charity called Tax Assist to see if they can help me with my accounts

I'll let you know how all of these went on the next blog entry.

In the meantime check out my books that are already available-

A change starts today in my startup life

A new chapter starts today as I go from employed and trying to set up my own business on the side to being full-time self-employed. I began this journey looking to develop an estate agency startup. The market for that is awash with uncertainty and I have developed my writing and the skills that go with it to the point where I am going to write full time.

My official leaving date from my job is 5th June but this is my short week (finish at half past twelve today) and I am on holiday next week so here I finish.

Over the next few weeks and months I will develop this blog further and keep you updated of all the developments that my life, writing and startup business go through.

I will still bring you information about how to develop your startup business alongside the progress I am making on mine.

Thank you for reading.
