Assessing your startup - where you have been, where you are now and where you are going

This is my moment to look both backwards and forwards in my startup journey. For those that have been with me from the start you will know how my journey has gone. For everyone else I will give you a short recap-

  • The idea was to start an estate agency in the town where I live
  • As I set about getting things in place I decided that I needed a residual income
  • I started writing
  • I blogged and I wrote my own eBooks
  • From there I found freelance writing
  • I started writing for others in my spare time
  • I then abandoned plans for the estate agency and became a full-time writer

This has been the journey of a few years summed up in a few bullets points so there have been highs and lows but this is the basic timeline that has brought me to here. Writing is now my life, so as well as this blog I write several others for myself. I write my own books still and publish them on the Amazon Kindle store.I write for other people. And I write whatever comes my way-
  • I ghostwrite books for people
  • I write marketing materials for people
  • I write the content for websites
  • I write social media post on behalf of companies
  • I write customer brochures
  • I write business plans
I pretty much write what people need, with the exceptions of school work and reviews. From this my business has grown and I will use this blog to briefly outline where I am today and where I think I will be over the next 6 to 9 months.

Currently

I have two websites that give me an internet presence. They can be found here-

They let the world know that I exists and along with my social media presence are the outward face of my business. They give me access to customers and also give customers the opportunity to check out what I am and what I do before they get in touch.

A lot of my work comes from existing relationships that have come from varied sources and developed over the years. I work for people all over the United Kingdom, and indeed the world, on a regular basis and write for certain people month in, month out.

A great source of business is going to be the BNI networking chapter that I have joined. It is going to break all records as the biggest group to launch in the UK and Ireland and is doing this at lightning pace. I am very proud to be a part of the group and I look forward to being able to give my fellow chapter members a lot of business from my contacts in the future.

The future

I am growing at a much faster rate than I expected at all. The business is flowing and I am being asked more and more to help people with their writing, especially content writing for businesses. I can see a pint in the future 6 to 9 months where I will be looking for someone to help with the writing and join me. I haven't got through Christmas and January yet as my first year of full-time trading so I don't know how quiet it might go. But I am quietly confident that this will be more than I can produce fr myself in the not-too-distant future.

My new novel is being written now and I am around a third of the way through the writing process. It does tens to take a back seat when I am working hard for other people but the idea is to have it ready to be published in the early part of the new year and be generating sales from then.It will be the first fiction book I have written for myself and I am really looking forward to seeing it out there and marketing it. I think it will make a splash.

This has helped me as I have been writing to clear my mind and look to the future. I suggest that if you are looking for a bit of clarity in your startup business right now then you go through a similar exercise. It allows you to focus on what is important and where you want to take your business.

Top 4 things to remember when using content marketing to supercharge your startup

Content marketing helps your startup business to reach new customers. When you begin in business you need a steady supply of customers to get off the ground and continue on a successful trajectory. Content marketing establishes you and your business as an authority in your industry. It connects you with more potential customers and develops a level of trust. Here are my top 4 things to remember when using content marketing to supercharge your startup-

It can be a slow burner
Content marketing doesn't always bring you immediate results. This is about building a rapport with your customers and that just doesn't happen overnight. You are sowing seeds that will grow over time. You and your audience need to get to know each other first. The work you put in here means that when someone needs your service or product you are the provider of choice.

You have to stick at it
Content marketing builds over time. You can't upload content at the start of a campaign and then completely forget about it. Content marketing doesn't work they way. You need a constant flow of quality and relevant content for your readers. This helps you with your SEO rankings, keeps your content looking fresh and connects with more customers.

Publicise it
Content is great for furthering you'd startup business but you need people to read it. To get an impact from your content marketing you want to spread the word as much as you can. Use your website and your social media reach to get the message to as many potential customers as possible. The more people that read what you have to say then the greater chance you have of your message being read, shared, liked and commented on. The more you can connect with people the more well-known your brand becomes.

Fish in the right pool
A strong message is great but it has to be seen by a relevant audience. You want to get your message out there in all the right places. You need to know where your audience hangs out so you know you will reach them. Look at all the options you have, especially social media, so you can find the relevant market for your product or service. By connecting with your people in the places they already spend their time then you will appeal to them. This is another step towards turning them into your future customers.

If you are looking for help with your content writing then get in touch via my website. I can write content for you and help your startup business get off the ground.

Deciding on an accountant after speaking to two

As I have started to pull things together for my startup business I said that I would keep you informed. On Monday I went about the business of finding an accountant. I had emailed some the week before and two came out from the crowd as people I'd like to speak to. I arranged to meet them both on Monday afternoon - and here's how it went.

Accountant 1

Although accountants have a reputation.l for being dull, this was not the case at all. I spoke to them and found that they were  vibrant, switched on and really interested in my business. As with the other accountant (more later) it was a no-obligation chat. It gave me the chance to ask questions, gain knowledge and build rapport. This was everything I had hoped for but probably not what I had expected.

I wanted to know the things that would directly affect me such as how I should set up my accounts, when I was due to pay tax and how much their service cost. I felt as thing they had my best interests at heart and I could work with them. We left it as we would stay in touch but nothing was needed until the end of the tax year in April 2017.

Accountant 2

This was a little bit of a contrast and it felt like I was dealing with a used car salesman or financial adviser. There was some interest in what I did at the start but it felt false. After that it was all about trying to get me signed up and trying to sell me extras such as accounting software and a business bank account. I know everyone has to make money but it didn't feel right.

Again I said that I would stay in touch but I did email to say that I would be using someone else.

Conclusion

With many people you deal with in business (or anywhere in life) it is the feeling you get that dictates your decisions. I don't think it is fair to name names on here. I am based near to Durham in England so if you are looking for an accountant in this area message me and I can give you a bit more detail if you'd like.

The next step is a business bank account. I'll let you know how I get on with this soon.

Ghostwriting and self-publishing startup in earnest today

Today is the first day of my new life. That may sound a little dramatic but that is exactly what it is. I finished my employment in Sunday, the kids were off school yesterday so today marks the start of my solely self-employed life. I find it a refreshing change already! I am now a writer. As regular readers of this blog will know-

I started out looking to set up my own estate agency.

I have fallen into writing for myself and others.

The estate agency idea is firmly on the back-burner today, but will come through in some of the other things I do because I still write an estate agency blog, I have an estate agency/real estate gig on fiverr and I will be writing a guide on how to set up your own estate agency.

This blog will now take the form of something that informs readers about my progress, something that informs you about other startups and products that might be useful to you.

So with the start today I have planned out my next ten books so that I know what I will be able to produce over the next few weeks. The reason that I have done this is do that I don't have any downtime. My main source of income initially will be to write for others. This is so I can gain immediate income from producing things got other people. I am paid up front for this work and I don' t have to wait for sales. This puts me in a position where I can warm straight away. But I can't guarantee that I can fill every minute of every day with this. There will be times where I don't have anything to write for anyone else. In those times I will write got myself, add to my portfolio and give myself a chance of long-term income.

Today will also see three telephone calls-

  • The inland revenue to register as self-employed
  • The tax credit people with a change in my circumstances
  • A charity called Tax Assist to see if they can help me with my accounts

I'll let you know how all of these went on the next blog entry.

In the meantime check out my books that are already available-

Pro Sales Videos can help you add something great to your multimedia toolkit

Communication is the key for a startup business. You need to be able to communicate with investors and customers to make sure that your product or service is understood and that you gain investment or sales. How you carry out this communication will massively affect the results. The quality message needs a quality delivery or it will get lost and actually achieve nothing.

The whiteboard video is a great communication tool for any startup or small business because it immediately captures the attention of the viewer. If carried out correctly then the whiteboard video can convey your message quickly in a compelling way that will turn your website into a sales machine. Use the professionals. Use Pro Sales Videos.

The very best websites for the very best companies use high-end whiteboard videos because the quality is all part of the package that sells. This is more than a trend – it is something that adds quality, increases the image of your company and gets traffic and sales to your website. This is key to getting your startup business on the right tracks. You need traffic, credibility and sales in the early days of your business to protect it from the competition and get you on the road to success.

Pro Sales Videos will work hard to ensure that your whiteboard video looks great and promotes your business in the right way. Their packages start at only $325 and include-

  • Help with writing your script
  • Full design of the layout and storyboard
  • The use of professional background music
  • All the design and production work
  • The revisions you need
  • Professional voice over and making sure it is synced right
  • They will add your logo and/or your URL
  • The video is produced in HD quality
All of this means that your video will sing the quality of your brand and you can use it on social media, your website, YouTube or anywhere else that you might want your brand to be seen. This is the kind of content that can cost thousands of dollars with other providers but Pro Sales Videos do it with packages that start at only $325.

Startup business is a treacherous one. If you do not get your name out there quickly and effectively then you can get lost among the crowd. A quality whiteboard video from Pro Sales Videos will transform what you can show people and help you to succeed.

Devotion drives the startup owner and Devoted Fan is a great idea

There is one thing that comes out when you speak to startup entrepreneurs about their business. It is their devotion to what they do in their lives every day. Devotion is a major factor in being successful at anything and in today’s blog I take a look at a website that has been born from devotion and looks like it will be taking the next steps on to something big.

Devoted Fan is a great website that I have come across. It has been developed to show devotion to some of the things outside of the business world that inspire us in our everyday lives. I have written in one of my blog pieces before about inspiration and it plays a really important part of making us who we are. This great website takes it to the next level. This is a fantastic website where you can get the chance to-

  •          Browse and vote for your favorite celebrities from all the different categories we have
  •          Share those great selfies you have with your favorite celebrity
  •          Tell the world about the impact a celebrity had or is having on your life in your own words

There is a dedicated page for each and every celebrity so you can see all the love they have and the stories, selfies and inspirations people share about your most loved celebrity. This is a great way to get involved with the celebrity or celebrities you love the most and let the world know just how much you love them!

Devoted Fan is a great idea for a website and you as a startup entrepreneur can use the inspiration that it brings to your own business. The fact is that celebrity sells and people always want a forum to voice their opinions. If you can provide either of these for your startup business then you will stand a much better chance of being the entrepreneur that survives. In your own industry or specialism you can tap into how people want to share their ideas and inspirations to help your company to succeed.

Check out the website today at Devoted Fan then you can see what a great idea it is and share how your favorite celebrity has inspired you in some way. Perhaps we can get a category going for business leaders! I put forward the name Sir Richard Branson to start the discussion rolling.

The Strategic Startup is a great place to expand your Startup business

The best startup entrepreneurs are learning all of the time. They take on information and process things that can help them with their business all the time. One great way to gather information that can be useful to your startup business is by reading blogs. I have found a great blog that is interesting and full of useful information. It is called The Strategic Startup and it is full of tips and ideas on how to make a success of your startup business.

It is a sad fact that so many startups don’t make it through the first year. This is not through a lack of ability or knowledge but often through a lack of learning. I urge my readers to open their eyes to all potential sources of information that can help you to expand your horizons and become the best startup entrepreneur that you can possibly be. The Strategic Startup is a fantastic place to start. From the very first words in the very first entry you can feel the enthusiasm that Kishan, the writer of this blog, has for this subject. Enthusiasm goes a hell of a long way in startup business and this guy has it in spades.

I have looked at reading books and articles, attending meetings and listening to others in the same way throughout my career. You may well go to a meeting, for example, with the attitude that you have heard all of this before. You would actually be wrong. If you go in with the attitude that if you learn just one new thing then you will have made a success of that time. With The Strategic Startup blog from Kishan Modha you will learn all kinds of new things that can be applied to your startup business-

  •          How to develop your potential
  •          How to set up your startup business
  •          The research you need to carry out at the start of your business
  •          Planning your short-term and long-term goals
  •          And more!

The Strategic Startup is a wonderful place to add to the knowledge and experience that you have when getting your startup business off the ground. As your business develops then you will want to arm yourself with more knowledge and more skills to cope with the oncoming challenges that any startup business faces.  By reading the informative and inspiring words of Kishan you will get a massive helping hand on your way to success.

IntroMaker can help your startup to gain a presence in the market

I write regularly about the need for your startup business to be seen. The exposure that you gain can be the difference between success and failure when it comes to your startup. When your potential customers first come into contact with your brand you want them to sit up and take notice. The brand that can do this is on to a winner. The brand that loses a potential customer at the first hurdle may never see that potential customer again.
So how do you create engaging content that sticks? How do you get one-time visitors to return? How do you get the market to remember your name?
www.IntroMaker.net produce high-quality and engaging video intros that automatically feature your logo or image. This is a great way to engage your audience whilst embedding the image of your logo on their mind.
Use the intros for-
·         Your website
·         In conjunction with your YouTube videos
·         As web intros
·         On social media
·         As an email signature
The startup business that can engage their potential customers from the very outset can win big. The concept behind it is that the video intros can be there to explain things to your customers when you can't. It is available online at all times of the day or night. It is alive and working for your company when you are asleep.
You just can't beat a personalized introduction; the face to face conversation that used to be the hallmark of every great business. But the fact is nowadays that your next customer may be at the other end of the country or in the other side of the world. The best way to introduce yourself to customers in the Internet age is with a video intro. It gets the message across in a way that modern consumers want to interact with. It says to your potential market that you understand them and want to meet them on their own terms. This is a way of driving business.
Customers of www.IntroMaker.net include-

Youcollide.com can help you to collaborate and improved subscribers

At '245 days…' I look at the different ways that you can get your startup in success mode as quickly as possible. There are different ways of getting your name out there in front of your customers. The more quality exposure that you get, the more likely it is that the exposure will drive web traffic and sales.

Startup business needs clicks on the website and orders through the door in the very early days. Engaging content that gets the audience to stay in your website is a must. One great way of retaining website traffic is through online videos.

One method of getting video viewers from other websites to yours is via collaboration. This means working with others to achieve your goals. A great way to collaborate is to share the videos you make with other entrepreneurs that have equally passionate followings. This increases subscriber counts, drives the exposure you can get and will lead to more sales.

This is where Youcollide.com comes in. They boost your clicks with a simple 3 step method-

  • Sign-up
  • Create
  • Grow

It sounds really easy doesn't it? The way to success is to have a multi-channel offering. If you produce quality and engaging YouTube videos then you can benefit in two ways-

Driving relevant traffic to your website

Earning money from the videos themselves

The answers lie with the help you can get from youcollide.com in generating quality relationships with other video creators. In business it is great to work with like-minded people. With video marketing this can mean cross-referral and a link from one creator to another. This generates quality traffic for you.

Youcollide.com allows you to find relevant providers that are near to you and get a collaboration going that will benefit both parties. From her you can grow your audience and this means the audience grows and grows over time. The more quality collaborations you have then the bigger that audience gets. This means that you and your collaborators will gain a greater number of views over time and the benefits this will bring for your income streams. Entrepreneurs can bounce off the passion and drive of other entrepreneurs. Don’t go through his alone - let youcollide.com help you to find collaborators, grow your audience and gain more income. The successful startup needs as many relevant income streams as they can find to get a foothold in their market.
